Interview: 'Reasoning With Vampires' Creator Discusses 'Twilight' Abuse → crushable.com

“Stephenie Meyer is not Dostoyesky, nor is she trying to be. I get that. While I rip Twilight apart, I try to keep in mind what it is. Twilight is a romantic fantasy novel for young adults. Edward is a vampire. These intrinsic characteristics mean that it will be sappy, unrealistic, and the main love interest will be creepy. Even if I give Twilight the elasticity to be those things, it’s still a massive failure. It exceeds the disbelief I’m willing to suspend. The romance is unsupported. Edward is less of a mythical monster and more of a Lifetime movie abusive husband.”

Mah fave excerpt. Go on, RwV.

St. Louis: Gateway to Violent Crimes → stltoday.com

The study by CQ Press found St. Louis had 2,070.1 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, compared with a national average of 429.4. That helped St. Louis beat out Camden, which topped last year’s list and was the most dangerous city for 2003 and 2004.

-

I never lived in the city. I was a local tourist, a school field tripper or a “oh, hey, let’s go somewhere fancy like the Galleria or Plaza Frontenac” shopper. Still, St. Louis is the geographical orientation I use when I explain the location of my hometown, so there’s a special place in my heart for the Gateway to the West. Even if I have to hide my wallet in my cleavage when I fly home.

An unabashed love letter to Ginny Weasley → feministing.com

feministlibrarian:

“…

All that said, I’m not thrilled with the way you’ve been depicted on screen. I think they make you out to be way less self-reliant and way less gutsy than you are in the book. And I don’t know why they had you tie Harry’s shoes in the sixth movie; it was really out of place. Maybe they meant it as a fellatio metaphor, but let’s be honest: you’re Ginny Weasley. You probably give real blowjobs, not metaphorical ones.”

Good bye for now, Privilege-Denying Dude  → jezebel.com

“What sadness! Like a beautiful shooting star whose light burns out too soon, the Privilege Denying Dude Tumblr is no more. Its creator says Tumblr suspended it for ‘extensive copyright violation.’ She wonders if there’s more to the story.”
